Seriously Y'all! I went Sea Kayaking, LOVED it and lived to tell the tale! I am not a professional kayaker, swimmer or very sporty. This was an option as an excursion from our Carnival Cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. My sister and I chose Sea Kayaking. It sounded the most exciting, we wanted to be by the water and we knew it would provide great stories and beautiful views. Oh boy did it!
If you are like me, it may even sound a little scary. Out in the big ocean in this little kayak?! Yup. YOU CAN DO IT! I saw this cute little yellow sea kayak, listened to our guides and started to feel a little nervous. I convinced myself it couldn't be too bad because I had a life vest on.
They instructed us that we needed to paddle out past the big waves coming up on the beach as fast as we could. Two people per kayak and you had to be in sync. This is listed on a few sites I have checked since then as an intermediate kayak tour. A beginner would be to start in a harbor at a dock somewhere. eeek! We still did it, as beginners.
First few kayaks went out. Some looked like pros. They had their paddles completely perfect. Others not so much. We may or may not have giggled and spoke about how we absolutely have to make this work. Next it was our turn. Our guides pushed our kayak into the blue ocean and away we went. Paddling with all our might so we didn't get toppled by a huge wave. whew. We made it AND we did great! I sat in the back and am happy to say our paddles mostly matched perfectly! We did it! This helped us propel the kayak where we needed it to go much more efficiently then if we didn't coordinate. Once we past the heavy in coming waves it was relatively calm. I knew I needed to share this experience with you. I knew I had to spread the word that this should be a top priority of activities in your travels. My top reasons why....
Reason one, It was absolutely unreal being out there surrounded by so much ocean. It was peaceful and beautiful as you can imagine. Something so magical happens when you can hear the waves , feel the water and forget about everything else you usually have to think about. Relaxing is an understatement.
Reason two, You learn how strong you really are! Mostly I am speaking to those who have not been before. I never would have imagined that I could do this. I am a busy homeschooling mom of 7 kids. I don't think of myself as a lazy sit on the sofa all day lady, but... I also have not put forth the effort to be super athletic. I am not the person someone thinks of when they are listing off their sporty friends. haha
Somehow, this changed everything to me. It was hard. It was a little scary , but I did it! We did it! We lived to tell the tale. We survived. Mentally, it sparked something in me, giving me the confidence to push myself further. Now, when I look at activities I could do on future trips, this is one on the top of the list. Is there water? Is there a place I could go kayaking with others? It was just that fun of challenge. I felt so good after. I knew I could push myself hard. Now, what else am I capable of that I never thought of before?
Reason three, Burn those calories baby! Sitting on the beach has its upsides but this.... This will get you using muscles you never knew were there. Depending on the location and challenge of waves and your fitness level you can burn up to 500 calories in an hour! A beautiful view AND you can help your body get stronger. I only see this as a win win!
Reason four, I found it a humbling experience. Here is why. It is easy to become complacent in your everyday life. Many live life in a 5 mile radius. Your world can become quite small , on accident. I don't think people mean to do this. It just happens. Being out there was a reminder to me of how vast the world is. Those oceans I see on my maps and globes at home are HUGE! I am but a tiny speck in the whole scheme of things. The ocean did its job reminding me of this. There is so much out there and I should never get so caught up in my little world at home that I forget this.
Reason Five, It's just darn fun. We laughed so much. I found going with someone I knew (my sister) was the best part. It is a great social experience. We laughed and smiled the whole way. It is now a super fun memory we have together.
Now, you know. Find a sea kayaking experience on your next trip and see for yourself just how amazing it can be. Be sure to wear a life vest and make sure the group you go with has great reviews!
Best Wishes! Send me a message too! I would love to hear about your first time going!
